The Street Machine Nationals Godfather...Harry Hibler
Did you know that the original idea for the Street Machine Nationals is widely attributed to Harry Hibler, legendary drag racer, Petersen Publishing manager, and SEMA Hall of Fame inductee (2002)? Hibler pitched the idea in 1976 as a means of generating magazine features and creating interest for Car Craft Magazine and other Petersen titles. The event, formally launched in 1977, was held in Indianapolis because nearly half of the Car Craft readership at the time lived within four or five hours of the Circle City.

Mr. Hibler do you remember the 1981 Street Machine Nationals in Indianapolis Indiana. Im sure you do. I had a yellow 1968 pro street chevelle the police were towing away. Jon Asher had just finished shooting the car for a feature. You came out to the street . The police threatened you with jail.I had a great time. Jeff Smith took me and my wife back to our hotel in the Car Craft van. Hope to here from you. Dave and Nancy Reidel
